El avance propuesto por el Gobierno de Fran\u00e7ois Hollande no legaliza la eutanasia activa, pero garantiza el derecho de los pacientes en fase terminal o con enfermedad grave e incurable a una sedaci\u00f3n profunda y prolongada hasta la muerte, retirando al tiempo todo tipo de tratamiento tendente a prolongarle la vida de manera artificial. La opini\u00f3n del enfermo (y por tanto tambi\u00e9n su deseo expresado en el testamento vital) estar\u00e1 por encima del criterio m\u00e9dico si la propuesta sale adelante.
